 Should I follow design trends? Should you follow design trends? Like most creative crafts, design often has its fashions and its trends. Maybe a distinctive style or feature that's popular for a limited time. Lately in tech, it's been all ultraviolet, purples, and pinks and pill like rounded navigation bars.

Often these styles will be a refreshing change from what came before. They've got this kind of eye-catching modern feel, but they can look really out of date six months or a year later. This doesn't mean you should never jump on board with a cool new design trend. You've just got to be conscious of how long your design needs to last, and whether using a fashionable style will make it look outdated later on.

Perhaps you are designing a campaign that's going live in the next few weeks, or making a website for an event later this year. In those cases, participating in a trend like this can be a fun way to show your contemporary. But if you're designing an enterprise website or an e-commerce app, something that's likely to be around for many years before a redesign, in that case, you probably want to stick with either a conventional or completely original direction.

Design is really all about context and good designers learn how to judge which styles suit the job. Design trends can be fun, but it's always worth exercising just a little bit of caution.
